My hesitance to write this article on Karl Lagerfeld’s most recent fall couture collection for Chanel is majorly due to the intimidating complexities of the garments, that and my self doubt as a writer. The collection is elaborate, dark with luxe undertones that gradually become more dominate as the show progresses. Garments were encrusted with intricate Imperial beadwork and crystals while tweed coats featured lavish fur trimmings. Femininity is incorporated through the incorporation of floral prints, laces and sheers. The silhouettes were voluptuous as seen in previous collections from the designer.

For this couture collection, Riccardo Tisci opted for a more intimate presentation “I want to make couture even more special than it is, and not just another catwalk show.” Consisting of only ten looks, the collection was elegant, romantic yet remaining quite gothic. Inspiration was drawn from Frida Kahlo’s interests in the human anatomy, sensuality and religion. The collection was much softer in comparison to the designers’ recent work in terms of colour palette and also in the ornate embellishments. The intricacy of the dresses were in the delicate laces, ostrich feather and fringing. The silhouettes were sleek yet feminine with emphasis on the skeletal figure of the human with the incorporation of corsets, belts and zipper details. Embellishments such as pearls, crystals and beading added luxurious couture appeal whilst house signature toughness and edge is integrated through the gold studded waist belts and zipper detail.

1. The time you felt most inspired by fashion – your most inspiring fashion moment
I’m sad to say that my mother didn’t dress me when I was a kid. She had a friend that used to gift a whole lot of clothes that she would make in her copious spare time – not having kids of her own. They were definitely not garments that inspired me fashion wise, they consisted of lots of puffy floral dresses and ruffles… a fuck load of ruffles. The first time that I remember being inspired by (or even interested in) fashion was my first visit to Tokyo (2003) and seeing the distinctive style that everyone has there. It wasn’t one of those teenage moments where I immediately thought, shit I want to dress like these girls, but more of the idea of dressing the way you wanted, exhibiting your individuality and expressing yourself through the way that you dressed.
2. The time you were proudest of your outfit or style
I’ve never really dressed myself and thought “shit I look fantastic!” in front of the mirror, maybe if I did that I would post daily of what I wear on my blog. I’m more the type to look around and mentally critique the outfits of others – after all it is easier to judge what other people are wearing rather than taking a stab at your own outfit (my self esteem is not that low). The first time I thought that I might have had the tiniest morsel of style was when a friend of mine (that would soon go on to become my best friend and fellow fashion enthusiast) asked me to take him shopping and make over his wardrobe. I had an absolute ball going on a retail rampage without harming my piggy bank; we spent a few grand in less than half an hour… so fabulous!
3. The Time in Fashion you would most like to return to – e.g 60’s style, 70’s style…
Personally I’m not a fan of these modern decades of fashion. I don’t wish I was a groovy diva, a hippie, punk… whatever, maybe it was the repetitive and super daggy dress up parties the kids in my grade used to throw *shudders*. I don’t really associate my style with any of these decades but to answer this question I think the era I would most like to return to would be 18th century Paris. Milena Canonero’s costume design in Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette says it all. I can only begin to imagine the gowns that women actually wore back in the day; it’s a time in history where fashion was highly significant to people.

Besides the fact that I absolutely adore Australian model Emily Wake, that featured in the Erin Fetherston resort collection, the looks showcased were intriguing in themselves. Although I am a few days late, this didn’t prevent me from posting this collection as it usually does. The looks were very ladylike; simultaneously oozing femininity and sophistication. There was a distinct delicacy to the clothing through the soft pleats, the chiffon neckline dresses, colour palette and cinched waistlines. Blacks, whites, beiges, navy, grey prints and orange-red comprised a simple and muted colour palette with the exception of the red. My favourite piece… the short sleeved beige pleated mini dress as seen above.

Numero #114
Shot by Greg Kadel
Modelled by Miranda KerrWoah, Miranda… Is that really you?? Like shit, this is fantastic! I have to admit I have never liked Miranda Kerr all that much. She was this cute little Aussie girl, always smiling, always bubby, boasting on and on about how healthy she was but all the while being skinnier than most models. I liked her a little more when she made her appearance on the Givenchy runway… I think it was the bleached eyebrows. But wow, who would have thought a little strawberry blonde and some bleached eyebrows would transform the girl beyond recognition? In this shoot for Numero, Kerr is alien-like mashed up with her typical sex appeal. Dressed up as a slutty school girl… well we haven’t seen that before.
