Sara Phillips Autumn Winter 2011 – Unbridled

The latest from Sara Phillips is a mix of goodies. There’s the soft pretty pastels, bright colours and darker sombre tones… put a few floral prints, some plaid, stripes in and you have a collection to suit all.

Another breathtaking collection by Riccardo Tisci, taking off from a similar leg of his last couture collection for Givenchy. This time around, the gothicised take on anatomy was replaced by Japanese influences; particularly in the craft of origami, its’ technological advances and ‘Butoh’ performance art. Extravagant Treacy headpieces, reminiscent of samurai helmet/paper hat hybrids were showcased alongside the ten looks. The collection overall is a vision of delicate, painstaking beauty. The attention to detail, technicality and hours of labour exceed those standards associated with haute couture… yet I find myself underwhelmed by this collection as compared to Tisci’s previous Fall Couture 2010 collection. At the risk of sounding vulgar, I cannot help but point out the disturbing resemblance to the vaginal imagery in works such as Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party on the back of the final three gowns (hot pink)… something I don’t particularly want to see on the back of such elegant, romantic gowns…
